Endeavour 9: FILM 2 – part 1

Saturday, August 6th, 2022

Endeavour series 9 is still in production so I’m afraid you won’t find any spoiler photos here. Most of the crew on this series are new to Endeavour but there are some familiar faces too. Here are some pictures from the first day of filming in Oxford on FILM 2 of series 9. The last photo is from the following day in Magdalen College.

[Tech info:] Leica M6, 28-50mm Tri-Elmar lens, Ilford DELTA 400 developed in Ilfosol 3. Pakon scans. Last photo is on HP5 film, 50mm Summicron lens.

Endeavour 7: FILM 3 – part 4

Tuesday, December 17th, 2019

These shots were from the final day of filming on Endeavour 7 | FILM 3 at the studio that has some of the interior sets. Along with Anton Lesser we have Steve (standby carpenter) and Grant (third assistant director). For some unknown reason there is a mottling on the film which I haven’t experienced before. I developed this roll exactly the same as hundreds of others previously so I can’t work out how this was caused during development. More shots to come after UK broadcast.

[Tech info:] Rolleiflex 2.8F, Zeiss Planar, Ilford Delta 400 developed in Ilford DD-X 1+4.

Endeavour: wrap day on series 7

Monday, November 25th, 2019

It’s always a privilege spending a day with the Endeavour crew and even more so when it’s at the studio where the interior sets are built. The day I picked on series 7 to visit the studio coincidently happened to be the wrap day for the series and I was asked to make a group shot of the crew before their lunch break. I did the same on series 5 but this time the group was larger and even the caterers managed to squeeze in. A nice record of a fun day. More pictures to follow.

Oxford: Endeavour 6, FILM 4 – part 8

Thursday, August 1st, 2019

Behind the scenes during filming of Endeavour 6 | FILM 4 in Oxford, October 2018. This is the ‘pelican man’ scene that was filmed on New College Lane on a very overcast day with a rapidly dropping light level. As usual the crew pulled it off just as the street lights started coming on.

[Tech info:] Leica M6, 40/1.4 Voigtlander Nokton, Ilford Delta 400 developed in DDX 1+4. Pakon scans.

Oxford: Endeavour 6, FILM 4 – part 6

Wednesday, June 12th, 2019

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour 6 | FILM 4 in November 2018. This was the penultimate day of filming on the series and my last day documenting the crew. It was all interiors in the studio on this day with various scenes filmed out of order which I found both intriguing and confusing.

Oxford Union – Kurupt FM Q&A

Thursday, January 17th, 2019

Kurupt FM (AKA the guys from the BAFTA award winning comedy series ‘People just do nothing’) came to the Oxford Union for a Q&A event and I went along to photograph them. If you’ve never seen the show I highly recommend it – you can find it on BBC iPlayer.

Oxford Union: Glenn Close Q&A

Saturday, April 21st, 2018

Glenn Close visited the Oxford Union for a Q&A event and here are some of the pictures I made to document what was a fascinating, funny and quite moving talk. The video from the event isn’t on the Oxford Union YouTube page yet but hopefully soon. I highly recommend it. My go to film for Oxford Union events is usually Ilford HP5 but on this occasion I decided to give Delta 400 a try and I do like the results. It feels like there is slightly less grain and a tad more shadow detail than HP5 but I need to do a more controlled comparison to really tell. In any case I’m very pleased with these results.

Oxford: Town vs Gown Boxing 2018 – part 2

Monday, February 19th, 2018

Here are some of my pictures from the Town vs Gown 2018 boxing event which was held at the Oxford Union. These shots are from the final bout when I decided to try out a film I don’t usually use very often – Ilford Delta 400. I pushed this roll to ISO 1600 because the light levels were low and I’m pleased with the results.

Oxford Union: Mary Berry Q&A – part 2

Tuesday, March 29th, 2016

These shots from the Mary Berry Q&A session at the Oxford Union were made on a different roll of film from the previous set and I wanted to post these as a comparison. The previous set were made with Ilford HP5 and these were made with Ilford Delta 400, both were pushed two stops to ISO1600. After the Q&A there was a book signing session where the light level was extremely low but the Delta film handled it very well thanks to my fast Voigtlander lenses.

[Tech info:] Leica M2, Voigtlander 35/1.2 and 50/1.5 lenses, Ilford Delta 400 at ISO1600, developed in Ilford DD-X. Pakon scans.

Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity Boxing 2016 – part 1

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016

The Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity Boxing 2016 event was held at the town hall in Oxford and I was invited along to do some photography to document the occasion. I had previously photographed this event in 2014 and it was nice to be back. It was also nice to see some familiar faces from previous alumni who had come along for support. The overall score was 52 – 52 so tension was high and I’m pleased to say that Oxford won to bring the trophy back home for another year. More pictures to come.

Oxford: lens test – Voigtlander Nokton 50/1.5

Saturday, November 29th, 2014

These are the first shots from my Voigtlander Nokton 50/1.5 lens which I tested during my lunch break yesterday. Technically this is the second roll of shots with this lens – the first roll was unusable because I forgot to close the back door of my M2 properly so the film wasn’t flat and the whole roll was out of focus. That’s what can happen when you’re excited to use a lens you’ve been looking forward to for quite a while. Lesson learnt. The weather was heavily overcast sky with a really gloomy feel everywhere. It’s the kind of light I would never usually waste a roll of film with but I really wanted to see how this lens performed so I decided to go out regardless and I must admit I do like the results, especially the bokeh, this lens is definitely a keeper. My thanks go to Jason Howe for all of his help and advice about this lens which I prefer for b&w over my Summicron 50/2. I’ll be keeping the Summicron because I shot some slide film with it and the results look fantastic so I can see it being useful for colour (as suggested by my friend Anthony).

Drama: backstage at The Furies – part 2

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

One of the things I enjoy about photographing drama productions is being able to test out films that I wouldn’t usually be able to test out during my lunch hour because they need low light conditions. These shots are from a roll of expired Ilford Delta 400 which I rated at ISO 800 and pushed one stop in the processing. It looks a lot different to the Kodak Double-X that I shot in the same conditions but rated at half the speed. Once again my Yashica Electro 35 proved to be the right camera for the job and I’m becoming a bigger fan of it the more I use it.
