Oxford: Balliol 750th Commemoration Ball 2013 part 1

Sunday, June 30th, 2013

Here are some of my images from the Balliol 750th Commemoration Ball that I made on medium format film. Once the sun had gone down I decided to switch to using only black & white film because I like how classic it looks – with lots of different coloured lights in the evening it can be quite distracting. The live acts in the second grid were King Charles (who were amazing) and Mark Ronson DJing. It was the first time I had photographed a live band with a twin lens reflex camera and although a bit of a challenge it was really good fun. With only 12 frames on a roll you really have to pick your moments carefully.

Photo shoot: Leonore & Cosima

Saturday, June 29th, 2013

These images are from a photo shoot I had a few weeks ago with Leonore and Cosima. I’ve photographed Leonore a few times for Industry magazine and the Oxford Tab but I’ve wanted to photograph her on film for quite a while. I had originally arranged the shoot with just Cosima but fortunately Leonore was able to come along too and as they’re friends everything worked out. I really enjoyed this photo shoot but as I’m not used to working with two people at once it was a little challenging – in a good way. I’ve recently been trying out a new film developer and I decided to put this roll through as a test. So far I really like the results I’m getting. More shots from this shoot will follow at a later time.

Oxford: Party elephant

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

Some film shots of Josh with the amazing elephant costume that he made for a party. Tamsin was called in to keep the elephant under control. Some Fujiroids from this shoot can be found here. These shots were from the very end of the photo shoot, I used some colour film earlier on but they’re still in my pile of colour rolls to develop so they will follow in the future. I’m trying out a new film developer (Kodak XTOL) and this was one of the first rolls of film that I put through it. So far I am really liking the results.

Oxford: Balliol 750th Commemoration Ball 2013 preview

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013

Last week Balliol College held their 750th Commemoration Ball here in Oxford and I was there to photograph the event. The weather was a perfect summers evening with gorgeous light and as a photographer I couldn’t have asked for more. I believe there were somewhere around 1,200 guests in attendance so I kept busy the whole night. While there was still daylight I used colour film and after it got dark I switched to black & white. The colour images will be a while as I try to decide on whether to develop them myself or to send them out to a lab. I have a pile of colour films I need to develop which has been steadily growing over the past 5 months. I’m waiting to order the chemicals necessary to develop them because the 5L kit is good for 100 – 120 rolls and once you start to mix the chemistry it has a shortish shelf life.

So, here we have a little preview of some of my black & white shots from the evening. The 2012 Balliol Ball last year was the very first Oxford University ball I’ve ever attended and some of the images I made on film that night are my favourites from all of the ball’s I’ve attended so far. It was nice to see some familiar faces at this ball from last year and also to meet some visitors of this blog. Lots more film images still to come but I’ll be drip feeding them because I have so many to post.

Photo shoot: Tamsin

Sunday, June 16th, 2013

These images are all from my first photo shoot with Tamsin which went extremely well and was very enjoyable. I’ve wanted to shoot with Tamsin for a while but timings and weather never seemed to work out so I was pleased that we were able to arrange this shoot before the end of the academic year and the summer break. For this shoot I took along three different cameras, these shots are from two of them (medium format Rolleiflex 6×6 and 35mm Nikon), the other was a Mamiya Universal that I used to shoot some Fuji instant pack film, those shots can be found here.

This shoot went so well that I managed to finish a few different rolls of film – I don’t usually have enough time to finish more than one or two. The others haven’t been developed yet so those shots will follow at a later time.

Photo shoot: Chloe

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

Here are some shots from a photo shoot I had with Chloe around a month ago. It was hard to whittle down my selection because there were so many shots that I liked from this shoot. Chloe is incredibly easy to work with which always makes for a high rate of keepers. I was struggling a little with the harsh late afternoon sunlight but it forced me to make the most of the natural reflectors that were all around us (i.e. the cotswold stone walls). We met outside the Sheldonian Theatre and while I was waiting for Chloe to arrive I noticed a photo shoot going on. The crew had a van full of clothes that was a similar style to those you find at Jack Wills but I’m not sure what brand it was for. They had nice late afternoon light to shoot in so they picked the right day.

[Tech info:] Pentax 6×7, 105mm lens, loaded with Fuji Acros 1o0 and Kodak Tri-X 400, both developed in Kodak HC110 1+31. Anti-clockwise from top right, the first three shots are on Acros 100, the others are on Tri-X.

Photo shoot: Georgina

Monday, June 3rd, 2013

This set of shots is from a photo shoot I had with Georgina a few weeks ago in an amazing college room with that reminded me of a big country house. It’s always nice working with Georgina because she’s an amazing actress and doesn’t need very much direction. I hope we can get to shoot in this room again because I think it would be nice to shoot some colour film next time.

[Tech info:] Mamiya 645 Pro TL with 80/1.9 and 110/2.8 lenses and Pentax 6×7 with 105/2.4 lens. Film used was expired Kodak Tri-X 400 and Ilford Delta 3200, both processed in HC110 1+31.

Oxford: guests going to St Peter’s College ball part 2

Saturday, June 1st, 2013

Here are the rest of the shots I made of some of the guests that were going to St Peter’s College ball. A few of these shots were not of the guests but they they were made during the same session so they were on the same roll of film which is why I decided to post them here. The light was fading quite fast at this point so I was struggling a little but these turned out great. According to Kodak you can rate their Tri-X film at ISO 400 or 800 and still develop it for the same amount of time. This proved to be correct even though I was using expired film.

Oxford: Keble Ball 2013 part 3

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

These shots are from a roll of medium format film that I shot at the 2013 Keble Ball. This is every frame from the roll. The start of the ball is always tricky for photography because I was racing against the fading light as the sun started to drop behind the college buildings as well as trying to stop people to photograph them amidst the flood of guests that were pouring in. It was helpful that I had photographed at last year’s ball so I knew what to expect.

[Tech info:] Mamiya C330f, 80/2.8 lens, loaded with Kodak Tri-X 400 film which I processed in Kodak HC110 1+31 for 7:30.

Oxford: Lunch hour session

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Here’s a set of shots from the same roll of film, all made during my lunch hour photo walk. These are from the end of March when the weather was still a bit chilly. You’ll see some familiar faces in this set.

Oxford: guests going to St Peter’s College ball

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Here’s the first set of images that I made last weekend of some of the guests on their way to St Peter’s College ball. It was a bit of a chilly evening and rather overcast so photography became tricky as the light level started to drop quite quickly. A lot of the students decided to wear coats (obviously to keep warm) but it’s not so great for photographs which is why I didn’t stop all that many people. I chose to process this roll in Rodinal for more of an old school look compared to HC110. It does increase the grain a little but I don’t mind that.

I’ll be photographing at Keble College ball on 4th May but as it’s the biggest night of the year for college balls (at least four on the same night) I’ll try to do some more group shots on the street of guests making their way to the ball so keep an eye out for me.

Oxford: OWP skatepark, 6×6 portraits

Sunday, April 28th, 2013

The warm summery weather we had last weekend was a little short lived and didn’t last very long so I didn’t manage to visit the skatepark on Meadow Lane this weekend. Here are a set of portraits I made last Saturday on medium format film. These guys are the early birds who were there right around when the park opened in the morning, more than likely making the most of it before the hoards arrived.
