Oxford: lunch break photo walk

Monday, January 8th, 2018

Here are some pictures I made during one of my lunch break photo walks. I’m not sure exactly when these are from but I think it was February 2017 – the exposed roll of film has been in my fridge ever since and only now have I had it developed, some 10 months later. I quite like sunny days during the winter for photography because the shadows around lunch time are fairly long and much more interesting that during the summer at the same time of day. The light is also warmer in colour too. These shots would have needed a warming filter during the summer months.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 2 – part 6

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017

Behind the scenes photography during the filming of Endeavour 4 episode 2 ‘Canticle’ in Oxford, August 2016. These shots are from the very end of the day as the sun was going down and shadows began to get longer. I wasn’t sure how the film would handle the extremely contrasty light and half expected the shadows to fill in to jet black but I’m very pleased with these results. Not bad for film I bought at Poundland.

Oxford: Morning fog

Sunday, March 19th, 2017

Here are some pictures I made on my cycle ride into work on a foggy morning in early November, 2016. The film I used expired in 2012 and was from the first batch of film I bought from Poundland when it opened in the Westgate Centre. I had never seen film at £1/roll so I cleared the shelf and when I got to the checkout they all had to be scanned individually, all 43 of them!

Gear: Kodak Retina test with colour film

Saturday, February 11th, 2017

I’ve enjoyed using my Kodak Retina camera since I got it recently and I wanted to test it with some colour film to see what the lens is like. This is the first test roll which was expired Kodak Color Plus 200 film which I bought in the Oxford Poundland shop when it first opened. The film expired in 2012 but I don’t think it’s too bad at all. These shots were made on a short walk around Sutton Courtney so don’t be surprised if this doesn’t look anything like Oxford.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 2 – part 4

Thursday, January 26th, 2017

Behind the scenes photography from Endeavour – Series 4 Episode 2 at New College, Oxford. This was at the end of the day which you can tell by the long shadows and harsh sunlight in some of the shots. At the time I had no idea that the main storyline revolved around the band Wildwood so after watching the episode I’m glad I managed to get the group shot with the band’s manager and some of the crew. For most of my Endeavour behind the scenes photography I tend to use b&w film the most overall but on this day I only took colour film because although I had no idea how colourful the song and dance routine was going to be, I did get a little peek at part of the set the day before when a couple of scenes were being filmed in New College so I got to see the final touches of glitter being added to the rainbow and a few of the props such as the coloured watering cans and the step ladders. That was when I felt I had to use colour film.

Funnily enough, the spot where the scene with the screaming Wildwood fans was filmed in New College Lane is the same place where Tom Cruise was filming scenes from The Mummy reboot a few months earlier. You can see some of my pictures of that here.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 2 – part 1

Monday, January 16th, 2017

Behind the scenes photography during the filming of episode 2 of Endeavour series 4 (Canticle) in Oxford last July on a scorching hot day. This was part of the opening title sequence and was filmed in New College on an immaculate lawn. The attention to detail on the set was amazing but sadly not all of it could be seen on screen because I guess you can only fit so much into a title sequence. More to come.

Film: Kodak Colorplus 200

Saturday, October 26th, 2013

All of these shots are from the same roll of Kodak Colorplus 200 film that has been sitting in my fridge for many months since I shot it. I’m not sure when these images are from, my best guess is April or May this year. Kodak Colorplus is the first film that I saw stocked in Poundland Oxford when it first opened in the Westgate shopping centre and I was so excited to see it for £1 a roll that I cleared the shelf. It didn’t seem to be stocked for long and was replaced by Agfa Vista 200. I like the look of this Colorplus film and have had nice results from processing it myself. Some things have changed since I shot these pictures, the motorbike window display was in Shepherd & Woodward, Aubin & Wills are no longer on the High Street and Richard has moved from the Oxford branch of Clements & Church to the Leamington Spa branch.

[Tech info:] Nikon F90, 50/1.4 lens (shots of Tailor’s Richard & Nick with 28mm/2.8), Kodak Colorplus film, dev & scan by ASDA in Swindon.
