Oxford: Endeavour 5, FILM 6 – part 5

Monday, May 14th, 2018

This set of pictures is a bit of a mixture and although they are all from the same roll of film, there are shots from two different episodes of  Endeavour. While the cast and crew were in Oxford to film the final episode of series five they also filmed some pick up shots for the first episode. I guess you only really know how well scenes properly fit together when you’re in the editing suite and any gaps need to be filled which is probably where reshoots come in.

Oxford: Endeavour 5, episode 3 – part 1

Sunday, August 13th, 2017

Behind the scenes photography during filming of Endeavour series 5 episode 3 in Oxford. It was a very hot day in July and the crew had a very busy schedule as I recall because they were only in Oxford for one day on this occasion. I decided to use colour film for a change to capture the summery feel. It’s not often you see the lighting crew setting up lights outside in bright sun but I must say it did make the front of the Jaguar look nice.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 3 – part 5

Tuesday, May 30th, 2017

This set of pictures is from August 2016 when Endeavour series 4 was being filmed in Oxford. This set is a bit of a mixed bag. The shots below that I made outside the Examinations School were intended for a different episode but I don’t think they got used. The two signs on the front of the building were there to make it look like the front of the Cowley Swimming Baths.  The shot of two people in the shadow of the big tree wasn’t used in the final edit. Lastly there are shots from Headington cemetery which I didn’t even know existed. The film I used is one of my favourites (Reala 100) but it’s sadly been discontinued by Fuji.

Oxford: Morning fog

Sunday, March 19th, 2017

Here are some pictures I made on my cycle ride into work on a foggy morning in early November, 2016. The film I used expired in 2012 and was from the first batch of film I bought from Poundland when it opened in the Westgate Centre. I had never seen film at £1/roll so I cleared the shelf and when I got to the checkout they all had to be scanned individually, all 43 of them!

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 2 – part 5

Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

Behind the scenes during filming in Radcliffe Square, Oxford of Endeavour series 4 episode 2. This was the first day of filming in Oxford for this episode on what started out as an overcast morning but turned out to be a very hot and sunny day. The tourists were out in force and the crew did an amazing job of crowd control with minimal staff. I must give a shout out to the props and art departments for the attention to detail that went into the table that was laid out with the petition (most of which was never seen on screen). It was so convincing that I saw some tourists trying to sign up! While all of this was going on the set at New College was being prepared for the dance routine that was due to be filmed the following day (last shot). More to come.

Oxford: Endeavour 4, episode 1 – part 6

Monday, January 9th, 2017

Behind the scenes photography during the filming of the first episode of Endeavour series 4 which is titled ‘GAME’. This was the morning of the very first day of filming in Oxford for this episode. The episode was broadcast last night (8th January 2017) on ITV and as I write this blog post I realise that I made these pictures 7 months ago. It’s nice to look back through them and remember how the 8am start meant that the streets were quiet to begin with but within a couple of hours it was mayhem as fans and onlookers crowded the pavements. I remember being impressed at how the fairly small film crew managed to clear Turl Street for a long lens shot from the Trinity College gates on Broad Street. Unfortunately I had a mishap in the darkroom while I was rushing to develop my films and two rolls got ruined so I’m unable to share those shots.

London: day trip with Ben

Monday, October 19th, 2015

Just over a year ago I went to London for the day with a photographer friend of mine, Benedict Campbell, with the sole purpose of doing street photography. The weather was unusually warm for October and we were fortunate to have some amazing light to photograph in. We had a fantastic day of photography and it’s something I hope we can manage to do again some time. I’ve still got lots of shots from that day to post and as it’s just gone past the one year mark I thought I would dig some out from my backlog.

Oxford: Cowley Road Carnival, 2015

Monday, August 24th, 2015

I did some photography at this years’ Cowley Road Carnival and here’s a small selection. The weather was a bit of a mixed bag, combine that with more people than you can ever imagine on the Cowley Road and you can see why photography was rather difficult this year. Still, I did enjoy the atmosphere and look forward to going again next year.

Oxford: Endeavour 3, episode 4 – part 1

Thursday, August 20th, 2015

The Endeavour crew rolled up into town to start filming the fourth and final episode of series three and here are some pictures from when I came across them on the first day of what was to be an exciting six day shoot. I don’t often use colour film when I photograph Endeavour filming but on this occasion it’s what I had loaded from when I was photographing Cowley Road Carnival the previous weekend. This type of film, Fuji Reala 100, is sadly no longer made but I managed to buy a batch of expired rolls from a company that used it to photograph school portrait and group shots before they switched to digital. It’s one of my favourite films that I bring out on special occasions. Lots more pictures to come from this episode.

London: from the hip

Sunday, November 16th, 2014

When I went to London last month for a day of photography with my friend Benedict Campbell, one of the cameras I took with me was a Canon Sureshot Ace point and shoot compact which has a wasit level finder on the top. I had only just got it so I decided to take it with me to see how useful it might be for some candid street photography. It took a little getting used to because the finder window is so small but I began to enjoy the low viewpoint and the ability to get quite close to people. Here are some of the results during lunch time in the city.

London: street photography day – part 1

Friday, October 10th, 2014

Last week I spent a day in London with my friend Benedict Campbell doing street photography and here’s the first set of pictures Ben and I used to work together at the same studio many years ago and it’s been over 20 years since we were out photographing together so I was really looking forward to this trip. The weather was surprisingly warm for October, there was a nice atmosphere on the street and people were in a good mood – all good ingredients for an enjoyable day to be photographing on the street. I took three different cameras with me and a selection of different films so there is a good variety of images to follow.

Oxford: Lewis filming – series 8 part 2

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

Some behind the scenes shots while series 8 of Lewis was being filmed on Broad Street, Oxford last month. It wasn’t easy for the crew to film on a main street during lunch time and they certainly drew a crowd of curious onlookers. I particularly liked how they had transformed the empty Blackwell’s music shop on the corner of Turl Street into a coffee shop called Fix. The shot in the bottom left is of the props guy’s moving in some of the furniture.

[Tech info:] Zenit TTL, 58/2 Helios lens, loaded with Agfa Vista 200 (Poundland) film, processed and scanned by ASDA in Swindon. (Thanks Simon).
